How to check Spotify monthly-listener history
Search for an artist in the Spotify Monthly Listeners Tracker to see the monthly-listener figures available in artist.tools. The history lets you examine how that artist’s audience changed across recorded dates without needing access to their Spotify for Artists account. Check the artist profile carefully when names are similar, and start with the earliest point available for the artist you selected.
What does “monthly listeners” mean on Spotify?
Monthly listeners are the unique people who listened to an artist during the last 28 days. The figure includes listeners from active and programmed sources. It is a rolling window, not a count for the current calendar month and not the number of times songs were played. Spotify distinguishes total monthly listeners from the smaller group it calls monthly active listeners. See Spotify’s audience definitions.
How to read a monthly-listener chart
Compare the figures at two recorded points to see the direction and size of the change. If a chart moves from 20,000 to 30,000 monthly listeners, the displayed audience is 10,000 higher at the second point. That does not mean the artist gained exactly 10,000 followers or received only 10,000 streams. It means more unique people fall within the 28-day listening window at that point.
Look at several points rather than one spike. A sustained increase tells a different story from a brief rise that reverses as listeners leave the rolling window. History starts with artist.tools’s earliest available record for that artist; it cannot reconstruct figures from before that record.
Why do monthly listeners rise or fall?
A release, playlist placement, promotion, or renewed interest may bring listeners into the 28-day window. The number can also fall when people who listened earlier move out of that window, even if the artist is still receiving streams. The chart can help you spot when a change happened, but it does not establish its cause or identify artificial activity on its own.
Monthly listeners versus followers and streams
These numbers answer different questions. Monthly listeners count unique recent listeners. Followers are people following the artist’s profile. Streams count qualifying plays, so one listener can produce several streams. Compare them when assessing growth, but avoid treating one as a substitute for another. For song-level play counts and history, use the Spotify Stream Counter.

Monthly-listener history is a useful starting point for examining audience growth. You can then review available playlist data for context. If a placement looks suspicious, investigate it with the Spotify Bot Checker; a rise or fall in monthly listeners alone is not evidence of bots.
